He fears Japan is so hell-bent on cranking out money-spinning genres, such as those starring "kawaii" cute female characters, that its anime "doesn't necessarily outshine" America's Disney or France's arthouse productions in terms of creativity. The 81-year-old acknowledged his career was in its twilight, and Maruyama was far from optimistic as he prepared to leave behind an industry he helped shape. Maruyama doesn't draw or direct, but he has clout that few in Japan's anime industry can match because of the breadth of the behind-the-scenes roles he has played - from studio founder and recruiter to fixer. If more freedom is unleashed, Japan will be overtaken in no time." "The only reason China hasn't quite caught up with Japan yet is because of a bunch of restrictions imposed on free expression there. "In Japan, people are no longer trained in animation," he told AFP in an interview. Maruyama, a protege of manga great Osamu Tezuka, said he fears Japan is losing its edge. Japan's powerhouse anime business risks being overtaken by rising Chinese competition because a tilt towards commercialism has stifled creativity, industry heavyweight Masao Maruyama has warned.

He, along with his food, was fresh and enjoyable. He was this fun guy that came up with brilliant and off the wall recipes with minimal ingredients. I remember when Jamie Oliver was The Naked Chef. It’s such a refreshing read when contrasted with the nonsense spiritual save the Earth editorial decisions behind the text of so many modern cookbooks. There are a few notes here and there, but I get the sense that Mom thought Marcella did a pretty good job. I remember a veal dish in a non-Hazan book exed out in pencil with the words “Never Again!” scrawled in the margin. I’ve got my mother’s copy of Marcella Cucina (1997.) Most of Mom’s cookbooks are heavily annotated. She’s more fun after she laid the groundwork. They have a sharper focus and capture the mood and culinary fetishes she’s entertaining at a given moment. Her later, shorter books are more adventurous. I assume that was an intentional and successful attempt to claim staple status among Italian cookbooks in the same way Rombauer had general European-American books. It resembles in style and layout, Rombauer’s The Joy of Cooking. Marcella Hazan (Her Name Be Praised) earned her place in the Italian cooking pantheon with Essentials of Classic Italian Cooking (Originally published in separate volumes as The Classic Italian Cookbook in 1973 and More Classic Italian Cooking in 1978 – combined, updated, and revised in the current single volume in 1992)Īs wonderful as it is, Essentials is as advertised. It has been for quite a while and I’m usually pretty capricious. It is a formidable achievement, worthy of careful, detailed study and evaluation.įor Swinburne, that theism is “coherent” means there is a version of theism that involves no logical or metaphysical impossibilities (53), both defined ultimately in terms of not leading to contradiction. Richard Swinburne presents us with a second edition of his 1977 classic, updated by considering some of the philosophical literature since then and making some switches in his views. It will be accessible to and appreciated only by analytic philosophers of religion, those who have followed the relevant literature. This book is not “The Coherence of Theism for Dummies.” It is a complex, intricately argued defense of one version of theism by one of the world’s greatest philosophers of religion. She introduces us to ordinary people whose untreated mental illnesses drive them repeatedly into the justice system-and in some cases, to their deaths. She takes readers from the overwhelmed mental health units of the Los Angeles County jail to the women's prisons of Oklahoma, which have one of the fastest-growing populations of people with mental illness in the country. In Insane, journalist Alisa Roth goes deep inside the criminal justice system to reveal how America's tough-on-crime policies have transformed it into a warehouse for people with mental illness, one where prisoners are denied proper treatment, abused, and punished in ways that make them sicker. As many as half the people in US jails and prisons have a psychiatric disorder. The country's three largest providers of mental health care are not hospitals, but jails. One in four fatal police shootings involves a person with mental illness. Summary: In America, having a mental illness has become a crime. It was awesome to go back and reread the Folk of the Air books because they were even better the second time, understanding what was going to happen and anticipating all of the twists! I reread THE CRUEL PRINCE, skipped THE LOST SISTERS novella because I felt like I didn’t need it, and dove back into THE WICKED KING earlier this month. To give a general recap on other things, I really enjoyed THE DARKEST PART OF THE FOREST again. I did do reviews for the Modern Faerie Tales trilogy because YIKES and because some of them were first-time reads for me. I was planning on doing reread reviews on the blog throughout the readalong but got a bit lazy. I’ve LOVED following along with everyone’s posts and watching their liveshows whenever possible. I’ve spent the last six months reading and rereading all of Holly Blacks novels set in or around the fae world, along with Kristin, Melanie, Jane, and Alexa. Last but never least is the wonderful narration of Rosalyn Landor. She's the next in line with the novella, A Kiss for Midwinter. The book follows some great ins and outs and the humor never fails. This book is about Robert, The Duke and Minerva (Minnie) and how they meet and fall in love.
